Tips
- •If using serrano instead of chipotle, seed it for milder heat and add at step 6 to taste.
- •For a slightly saucier picadillo, add another 60 ml broth and simmer a few minutes longer.
- •Make ahead: refrigerate and gently reheat in a covered skillet with a splash of water to loosen.
Steps
- 1
Prepare ingredients: peel and dice the potato (250 g) and carrot (100 g); dice the onion (150 g); mince the garlic (6 g); drain the tomatoes (200 g); mince the chipotle if using; measure spices and broth.

Origin & History
Picadillo is a widely made home-style dish across Mexico and Latin America; the Mexican version emphasizes savory meat with potatoes and sometimes tomatoes and chiles. This everyday skillet variant is practical and flexible, meant for quick weeknight meals rather than the fruit-and-nut versions from Puebla.
