Ingredients

Batida

  • 120 mlcachaca
  • 160 mlpassion fruit juice
  • 100 gsweetened condensed milk
  • 300 gice cubes

To serve

  • 30 gfresh passion fruit pulp
  • 100 gice cubes

Instructions

  1. 1

Chill 2 short glasses or small tumblers if possible. Measure all the ingredients so the drink blends quickly and stays very cold.

  2. 2

Add the cachaca, passion fruit juice, sweetened condensed milk, and 300 g ice cubes to a blender.

  3. 3

Blend for 15-20 seconds, just until smooth, frothy, and lightly thickened. Do not overblend or the ice will dilute the drink too much. Taste and, if you prefer a sharper drink, add a splash more cachaca; for a creamier style, add a little more condensed milk.

  4. 4

Put 50 g ice cubes into each glass, then divide the batida between them. Spoon a little fresh passion fruit pulp over each drink for aroma and texture, and serve immediately while thick and icy.

Notes

Background

Batida is a classic Brazilian family of cocktails made by blending cachaca with fruit juice, sugar, or condensed milk. Versions with maracuja became especially popular because passion fruit is abundant in Brazil and its tart perfume balances the spirit beautifully. Creamy batidas are common at beach bars, casual parties, and home gatherings.
