Batida de Tamar wa Louz

This chilled Moroccan-style smoothie is creamy, naturally sweet, and warmly spiced with cinnamon and cardamom. Dates give it rich caramel notes, while almond milk keeps it light, refreshing, and fully vegan.

Ingredients

Smoothie blend

  • 120 gMedjool dates, pitted
  • 500 mlunsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tspground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tspground cardamom
  • 1 tspvanilla extract
  • 120 gice cubes
  • 1 small pinchfine sea salt

To finish

  • 1 pinchground cinnamon
  • 10 gchopped almonds

Instructions

  1. 1

If your dates feel firm or dry, cover them with very hot water for 3 minutes, then drain well. This helps them blend completely smooth without diluting the drink. If they are soft and sticky, skip this step.

  2. 2

Add the dates, almond milk, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla extract, ice cubes, and a small pinch of salt to a blender.

  3. 3

Blend on high for 45-60 seconds until the mixture is completely smooth, lightly frothy, and very cold. Stop and scrape down the sides if you see date pieces clinging to the jug. Taste and adjust with a little more cinnamon if desired.

  4. 4

Pour into 2 glasses. Finish with a pinch of cinnamon and the chopped almonds for a little texture. Serve immediately while the smoothie is thick and chilled.

Notes

Background

Date-based milk drinks are closely tied to North African hospitality and breakfast traditions, where dates are prized for both nourishment and symbolism. In Morocco, almonds, cinnamon, and orange-blossom or vanilla-like aromas often appear in festive beverages and sweets, making this style of smoothie a natural modern extension of classic flavor pairings.
